BIG RIDE 019, ADELAIDE TO DARWIN Update June 2019
This will be up the middle and through the Red Centre. We’ll start from Adelaide and do the whole coast-to-coast again. The updated itinerary is:
Day one: Saturday Aug 3
-briefing at the Adelaide Clinic 8.30 to 10.00 a.m. then ride to Port Augusta, 305 km.
Day two: Sunday Aug 4
-ride to Coober Pedy, 541 km. Do something in Coober Pedy.
Day three: Monday Aug 5
-Coober Pedy to the roadhouse at Erdidunda, 487km.
Day four: Tuesday Aug 6
-Eridunda to Yulara (at Uluru), 246 km. We can walk around Uluru and go on to visit Kata Juta (the Olgas). We may also attend that celebrated candle-lit dinner in the desert which is all about stargazing.
Day five: Wednesday Aug 7
-Yulara to Alice Sorings, 446 km. If enthusiastic people want to leave early they can add the 2-300 km detour to walk around Kings Canyon. If people have time there are also a lot of interesting things to see around the McDonald Ranges: billabongs, Aboriginal rock art, even Pine Gap!
Day six: Thursday Aug 8
-Alice Springs to Tennant Creek, 508 km.
Day seven: Friday Aug 9
-Tennant Creek to Daly Waters Pub, 408 km.
Day eight: Saturday Aug 10
-Daly Waters to Katherine, 275km. Stop for a swim at the beautiful Mataranka Springs. Anyone who hasn’t done the boat tour up the Katherine Gorge will be permitted time off to take in that natural wonder.
Day nine: Sunday Aug 11
-Katherine to Darwin, 317 km. The finish line will be on the waterfront boulevard, the cliff above the sea!
The towns where we might have some activities are relatively few because the population is sparse and the distances long. The towns we will focus on are Port Augusta, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, possibly Mataranka and also Katherine.
